VIBTimes of April 2023
Inge Boets, Communications Director at VIB

Dear colleague,

Time for the last VIBTimes of this year! Discover the meaning of the fascinating word 'fucosylation', how our immune response can be improved to fight tumors, today's challenges of non-alcoholic beers, and much more interesting news.

Happy reading!

Kind regards,

Inge Boets, Communications Director at VIB

What the fucosylation?

A research team led by Massimiliano Mazzone (VIB-KU Leuven) found that the metabolic process 'fucosylation', the addition of a fucose sugar to a molecule can lead to a worse cancer prognosis. This discovery can help enhance the patient’s own immune system against cancer cells.

Researchers (VIB-KU Leuven) discovered that disabling autophagy, the process through which the body recycles old or damaged cells, can improve immune response against tumors by inflaming tumor vasculature.

For over two decades, EU Twinning projects have fostered scientific collaboration between EU Member States. These partnerships enable the exchange of knowledge, expertise, and best practices. The life sciences, after all, thrive on international collaboration. We delve into two such EU Twinning projects at VIB.

Revolutionizing non-alcoholic beer

Kevin Verstrepen's lab (VIB-KU Leuven) will partner with Danish multinational Chr.Hansen to bring two new yeast strains on the market for brewing flavorful non-alcoholic beers in an environment-friendly manner.

Spin-off in the spotlight

Orionis Biosciences is a life sciences company pioneering the creation of therapeutics for cancer and other diseases. This VIB spin-off just revealed that the first patient has been dosed in a Phase 1 clinical trial of ORB-011, an immunotherapy based on the company’s A-Kine® platform. In addition, they announced the appointment of Tony Fadell to its Board of Directors.

Roosmarijn Vandenbroucke receivesERC Consolidator Grant

This year, Roosmarijn Vandenbroucke (VIB-UGent) received an ERC Consolidator Grant to investigate how to transport drugs from the blood into the brain.

"The invaluable financial support not only ensures stability but also affords me the freedom to delve into the intricacies of our research."

ERC Synergy Grant for Kevin Verstrepen

This prestigious grant is awarded to research projects that are too ambitious to be tackled by one research group alone. Kevin Verstrepen (VIB-KU Leuven) is joined by Vicente Pelechano (Karolinska Institute in Sweden and Julien Gagneur (Technical University Munich in Germany) on the EPIC project.

2023 research Grants & Awards: a selection

In 2023, many VIB researchers received a grant or award, which is a recognition of the incredible research being done here. Of course, these grants and awards reflect the efforts of many people behind the scenes.

90th birthday party for Marc Van Montagu

Professor Emeritus Marc Van Montagu turned 90 this month. On the occasion of this festive news, we talked to him about his career, what he's most proud of, and his advice for young researchers."

"I am always impressed by people who can make decisions and implement ideas concretely. It is also these kinds of people who have helped me take certain steps. In English, they call this "nudging," and there are quite a few people who have "nudged" me."
