Brewing innovation from the past

Could the future of brewing lie in a remote Scandinavian farmhouse? A study led by Kevin Verstrepen (VIB-KU Leuven) identified a rich diversity of beer yeasts in traditional farmhouse breweries across Scandinavia and the Baltic region. This ‘living archive’ may resemble Europe’s pre-industrial brewing microbiome and could inspire new approaches to brewing innovation.

Targeting lung cells to stop metastasis

Researchers led by Sarah-Maria Fendt (VIB-KU Leuven) show how tumors exploit healthy lung cells to support metastasis. By reducing lipid production in lung cells, the scientists could limit tumor growth, which may lead to new therapeutic strategies.

New genetic clue for rare dementia

The lab of Rosa Rademakers (VIB-UAntwerp) has identified a major genetic risk factor for a rare form of frontotemporal dementia. Their findings provide an entry point for studying this difficult disease and may improve diagnosis and future treatment strategies.

Major awards for leading VIB researchers

In Hollywood’s limelight, Rosa Rademakers (VIB-UAntwerp) received the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for her discovery linking the C9orf72 gene to dementia and ALS. These ‘Oscars of science’ are among the largest and prestigious prizes a researcher can receive.

But that’s not all. Charlotte Scott (VIB–UGent) was awarded the Baillet Latour Biomedical Award for her work on macrophages in liver disease. And Albena Jordanova (VIB-UAntwerp) received the Generet Prize to advance research into Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

"We are beyond proud to see these researchers get the recognition they deserve. These awards underline VIB’s strength as a magnet for top scientific talent, and our ambition to remain a place where researchers can truly make a difference.”

Sustainability Week and Earth Day

As we wrapped up Sustainability Week with our first institutional Earth Day, we’re still thinking about Bob Hendrikx’s words on regeneration and Christina Agapakis’ thoughts on how synthetic biology can contribute to future living. A great day to reinforce our commitment to sustainability!
