A new therapeutic angle for chronic inflammation

Researchers led by Gabriele Bergers (VIB-KU Leuven) uncovered how autophagy helps specialized blood vessels maintain their function during inflammation. This points to a promising strategy for treating chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases without compromising immune function.

New hope through newborn screening

Since 1 June 2026, newborn screening in Flanders includes Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), a rare but life-threatening immune disorder. This milestone follows years of collaboration involving the PID consortium within VIB's Grand Challenges Program and will help ensure babies receive treatment before severe complications occur.

Putting patients at the center of diagnosis

To mark Sarcoma Awareness Month, we highlighted the COMPASS Grand Challenges project, which is developing a more integrated approach to diagnosing rare cancers. By involving patient organization Cum Cura as a full partner, COMPASS aims to deliver faster, more accurate diagnoses and better outcomes for patients.

Defence Innovation Day – Save the date 

On Tuesday 27 October, the Department of Work, Economy, Science, Innovation and Social Economy (WEWIS), together with Flanders Technology & Innovation, will host the first Defence Innovation in Flanders Day under the Flemish Innovation and Industrial Strategy for Security and Defence (FISD). 

The event brings together stakeholders from technology, innovation, and defence to explore the latest developments and future opportunities in defence innovation.
