VIB Technologies

More than a technology toolbox

VIB Technologies brings highly complex, novel technologies to researchers – and unites researchers across disciplines – to achieve scientific breakthroughs. “We offer much more than just a technology toolbox,” explains Saskia Lippens, Associate Technology Director at VIB. “We are the glue that connects scientists, Core Facilities and research centers around cutting-edge technology.”

Ready for the data boom

Frederik Coppens, Head of VIB’s Data Core

VIB launches its Data Core to provide researchers the tools to manage the increasing amount of data generated in life sciences research. Frederik Coppens, Head of VIB’s Data Core: “By building and reinforcing our dedicated data infrastructure services, we aim to increase standardization rates, reproducibility of data and of course data quality.”

What is the key to a healthy aging brain?

What is the key to a healthy aging brain?

As people age, they often experience problems with their memory and cognitive abilities. This happens in part because their brains become mildly inflamed. But there may be a solution: a small group of special immune cells, called regulatory T cells, could help reduce this inflammation in aging brains. Targeting the immune system might keep people’s brains healthy as they age.

Decoding the satiety signal

The protein hormone leptin signals our brains that we are full and can stop eating. To send that signal, leptin has to bind to a receptor on the cells that need to receive the message. Research has now revealed how leptin and its receptor work together. These results may spark new approaches in treating obesity, a major metabolic condition worldwide.

Warm welcome to our new group leaders

Emanuela - Manu - Pasciuto started her first lab of Neuroimmunology at the VIB-UAntwerp Center for Molecular Neurology in April 2023. Her enthusiasm is already palpable. Manu: "I want to make a change in the field of neuroimmunologyI feel very lucky that I was able to start working on that during my time here, but now’s my chance to really try and make a difference.”

Also welcome to Pedro Gonçalves, our new group leader at NERF (empowered by imec, VIB, and KU Leuven). The Portuguese scientist will move from Germany to Leuven to start his lab in Computational Neuroscience. He is actively seeking postdoctoral candidates and PhD students to join his team and collaborate on developing and applying machine learning methods to obtain mechanistic insights in neuroscience.
