How cancer cells escape the immune system

Researchers led by Sarah-Maria Fendt (VIB-KU Leuven) discovered how metastatic cancer cells use a fatty acid abundant in the liver to evade the immune system. The findings point to new opportunities for tackling liver metastases.

Congrats on the ERC Starting Grant!

New VIB PI Wouter Saelens has secured an ERC Starting Grant. He will combine AI and experimental biology to develop new ways to uncover how and when genes and molecular pathways steer cells toward a certain identity.

Immune cells rely on a cholesterol sensor to maintain balance

Researchers from Sophie Janssens' lab (VIB-UGent) uncovered an unexpected role for the protein IRE1 in helping immune cells maintain their internal balance, which opens up new perspectives on inflammatory and auto-immune diseases.

Congratulations, Wouter!

How plants evolved a molecular switch to cope with heat

A team led by Ive De Smet (VIB-UGent) identified a mechanism that helps plants maintain their natural cooling system during heat stress. As more extreme weather events become ever more likely, plants, too, will have to adapt.

Mapping plant-fungus symbiosis, cell by cell

Using single-cell technologies, researchers led by Sofie Goormachtig (VIB-UGent) created the first high-resolution map of how tomato roots respond to beneficial fungi, providing a glimpse into an ancient partnership that can help us prepare crops for a changing climate.

Discovering hidden structures inside human sperm cells

Scientists co-led by Tom Dendooven (VIB-VUB) discovered compartments inside human sperm nuclei that appear during the final stages of sperm development and may play an important role in fertility and early embryonic development.

Measuring the molecules that power life

On the VIB blog, Shauni Loopmans (VIB Metabolomics Core Leuven) introduces stable isotope tracing, a powerful technique that allows scientists to follow atoms as they whiz through the metabolism of living systems.

Building trust in biotechnology

Through the Horizon Europe B-Trust project, VIB and its partners developed new approaches to stakeholder engagement, highlighting the role of trust in successful innovation. Laurien van Dyck (VIB Grand Challenges Program) tells us all about it.
